The San Antonio Spurs won their second preseason game of the year, beating the Orlando Magic 107-97. The Spurs were one-point favorites, although they scratched Tre Jones and Keldon Johnson from the lineup right before tipoff.
All eyes were on Victor Wembanyama, who made his preseason debut for the Spurs after missing the first game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Wembanyama suited up next to Chris Paul and showed plenty of promise, as Wembanyama racked up 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and zero blocks. In his first game as a Spur, Paul posted five points and three assists in 23 minutes.
Orlando was led by Jett Howard, who scored 19 points. Paolo Banchero, who is coming off his first All-Star season, added 12 points in 17 minutes. Orlando lost their first preseason game, falling to the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday.
While Wembanyama and Paul stole the show, rookie Stephon Castle continued to show flashes of excellence. He followed up his five-point, six-turnover effort against the Thunder with 17 points and four assists while shooting 2-5 from three.
In the first preseason game for the Spurs, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Riley Minix, and Julian Champagnie all shot well from deep, and in the win against Orlando, Champagnie led the Spurs' shooting effort, making 4-10 shots and finishing with 12 points. The Spurs have been making outside shooting a focal point of their offense this season, which makes sense, given that Wembanyama is the anchor down low.
