MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Employees of a janitorial company contracted by Memphis-Shelby County Schools are demanding their paychecks.
Fresh Start Facility Services is scheduled to pay its employees weekly, but the workers say that's not happening.
One employee, Jalyn Cobb, told FOX13, "We ain't working for free."
Fresh Start Facility Services employees stood outside, tensions were running high, and law enforcement called. Employees at Fresh Start Facility Services showed up to the company's office in Memphis Wednesday demanding their weekly checks.
Employee Shae Taylor said, "Every time it's time to get paid it's a problem."
This time employees got an email shared with FOX13. It notified them their checks would be delayed again.
The email said, "Our invoice to MSCS is under review, which has caused a delay in issuing the payroll on time."
But this is not the first time employees say Fresh Start has been late with pay. FOX13 has covered Fresh Start Facility Services employees protesting outside the company and even threatening to walk off the job.
And even after employees waited hours to get their checks, some complained the amounts were not correct.
FOX13 asked one employee what she thinks the company is doing with the employees money.
She replied, "I have no idea. I have heard some many different stories. I have no idea, but this is bad business, but they wait to the day of to let us know we won't get paid.
"This is crazy. I have kids. I have mouths to feed," Shae Taylor said.
FOX13 reached out to Fresh Start Facility Services and Memphis-Shelby County Schools about the invoice and pay issues. We have not yet heard back.
