Bill Murray Ranks 'Weekend Update' Anchors -- Insults Them All

Bill Murray stopped by "Weekend Update" for the SNL 50th anniversary special. The former cast member, who co-anchored "Update" in Seasons 4 and 5, started off by giving all the Black anchors their own separate ranking.

"In honor of Black History Month, I want to start by ranking the African-American 'Weekend Update' anchors," Murray said. "We'll start with number one, and this is, by default, Michael Che."

Murray moved on to the "regular" anchors, although he first removed himself from the list. "Because my entire time here I was on performance-enhancing drugs," he explained.

For the #10 spot, Murray listed Colin Quinn, who anchored in the years after the late Norm Macdonald was fired. Kevin Nealon was ranked #9, Dennis Miller at #8, and Seth Meyers at #7.

"I just wish we had the time tonight to say something nice about any of them," Murray said. When Colin Jost pointed out that they had plenty of time, Murray just continued along with the list.

Ranked #6 was the duo of Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon, and at #5 was Fey and Amy Poehler.

"This was tough," Murray said. "It was close, but I checked online, and girl-on-girl is still, like, very, very popular."

Ranked #4 was Chevy Chase, the very first "Update" anchor. As Murray explained, "Cornelius Crane Chase, who we've all come to know as Connie. Let's face it, 'Weekend Update' simply would not exist without him."

#3 was the duo of Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd, who anchored together in season 3.

"True story: I was the first to call Jane an ignorant slut backstage," Murray revealed. "Danny had the brilliant idea to say it on camera and really, really mean it."

#2 was Norm Macdonald, who anchored from Season 20 to halfway through season 23, before being fired for making too many O.J. Simpson jokes.

"[MacDonald] may have done the best job," Murray said, "But more importantly, he made me ask the question of myself, 'Could O.J. possibly have done it?'"

As for Murray's final pick? It was all one big joke on Colin Jost:

"OK, number one is funny," Murray said. "He's got a great smile. And he's currently sleeping every kind of way with the lovely actress Scarlett Johansson. And, of course, I'm talking about my brother, Brian."

Even the biggest SNL fans may not remember that Brian Doyle-Murray did host the segment -- when it was briefly renamed "SNL Newsbreak" the first season after Lorne Michaels took an extended hiatus in 1981.
