YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -- A man suffered severe injuries after being run over by a car in downtown Youngstown last Friday morning.

Officers responded to the area of Commerce and North Phelps Streets around 2 a.m. Friday morning in reference to a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.

When officers arrived, a crowd of people were standing around a male was lying on the ground. According to reports, the man was in extreme pain and saying his legs were broken.

A few witnesses said they saw a group of people standing near a crosswalk when a red Lexxus came out of a parking lot at an extreme speed, appearing to purposely swerve into the crowd. The vehicle then knocked the victim to the ground and ran over the man with both driver-side tires, witnesses further state in police reports, before fleeing on Commerce Street towards Fifth Avenue.

Witnesses also state that the driver was thrown out of an establishment earlier for trying to instigate a fight about an hour before the incident. They also say that the victim was involved in a fight at the parking lot the driver fled from but with another driver in a black Dodge.

Emergency room staff informed officers that the victim had a broken pelvis and was in serious but stable condition.
