After two decades of anticipation, Disney has finally revealed the news we've been waiting for -- a Princess Diaries sequel is officially in the works. We've heard whispers about a third movie for years, but now it's real.
The announcement that Joy Ride's Adele Lim will direct has fans buzzing with excitement. And no one's more thrilled than Anne Hathaway herself. She took to Instagram, sharing a nostalgic throwback with clips from the first two films, released in 2001 and 2004. Remember her as Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo?
"Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures" Hathaway wrote. "The fairy tale continues ❤🔥"
Hathaway starred alongside the legendary Julie Andrews in these beloved movies, both directed by the late Garry Marshall, who passed in 2016. Recently, Hathaway gave fans a glimmer of hope amid doubts about the sequel. She told V Magazine, "we're in a good place," hinting at progress. "That's all I can say. There's nothing to announce yet. But we're in a good place."
Andrews has also chimed in on the sequel possibility, though her outlook wasn't quite as sunny as her co-star's.
"It's quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done, and I'm not sure, but sometimes it's best to leave a good thing alone," she shared with Today. "I don't like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, till it's dead. I'd be very happy if we did do another one."
Lim, the new director, isn't just known for Joy Ride. She's the creative mind behind 2018's Crazy Rich Asians and Disney's 2021 animated gem Raya and the Last Dragon.
"As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I'm beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide," Lim expressed in a statement to Variety.
