Gurley officer indicted on manslaughter charges in crash that killed bystander

A Gurley police officer has been indicted on manslaughter charges following a two-vehicle crash that happened in 2023 that killed a bystander.

A Madison County grand jury indicted Christopher J. Whalen on Aug. 30.

The wreck happened in July 2023 on Interstate 565 and Jordan Lane near mile marker 17 in Huntsville. According to state troopers, Whalen was pursuing a Nissan Maxima when his 2018 Ford Explorer struck a Toyota Corolla driven by Matthew Norwood, 22, of Toney.

Norwood seriously injured in the wreck. He was taken to Huntsville Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Bail for Whalen was set at $25,000.
