Semi, driver involved in fatal October hit-and-run found

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio (WJW) -- The semi truck and driver involved in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 77 near Strasburg that led to the death of a Bolivar man in October have been located.

According to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the driver of the red semi truck was identified as a 59-year-old man from the Cleveland area.

According to a previous release from the patrol, the crash happened Oct. 24 at about 11:40 a.m. A red semi pulling a flatbed trailer was going north on I-77 when the driver tried to make a U-turn through the median. A second vehicle going north, driven by Dennis Alsept, 78, was in the left lane and hit the trailer of the semi.

According to authorities, the semi briefly pulled into the southbound berm before getting onto I-77 South.

Alsept was transported to a hospital with serious injuries after the crash. He died from his injuries on Oct. 31.

The patrol gathered information that showed the semi traveled east on U.S. Route 250 through the towns of Apple Creek, Mount Eaton, Wilmot and Strasburg before getting onto I-77 North.

According to the patrol, the hit-and-run case has now been turned over to the Tuscarawas County Prosecutor's Office for review and potential criminal charges.
