Lockheed's Astris AI to drive AI adoption within US defence

Lockheed Martin has unveiled the creation of Astris AI, a new enterprise aimed at facilitating the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies within both the US defence sector and commercial industries with stringent assurance needs.

The company has allocated considerable resources to develop an advanced Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) software capability, a generative AI platform designed for high-assurance users, and to amass a team of skilled AI professionals.

These assets are now accessible to external entities through Astris AI, offering the defence industry and commercial enterprises the tools to craft and implement secure, robust, and scalable AI applications.

Astris AI is set to tackle the challenges organisations encounter with the swift evolution of technology, along with issues related to cost and scalability in creating dependable, high-assurance AI applications.

The suite of foundational tools provided by Astris AI encompasses Lockheed Martin's established AI Factory MLOps and generative AI software platforms, which adhere to the stringent security and compliance standards required in highly regulated sectors.

Employing an open-architecture framework, these platforms deliver technological and financial benefits by way of their modular design. This approach ensures flexible and durable AI capabilities that help clients stay abreast of an ever-changing technological landscape.

Moreover, Astris AI offers comprehensive AI engineering consulting services that span from MLOps and generative AI strategies to execution, training, as well as extensive model development and deployment. These services are designed to enable organisations to take control of their own AI tools, data, and solutions.

The current market for AI expertise is characterised by high demand that outstrips supply, presenting significant obstacles for companies seeking to scale their AI solutions.

Astris AI aims to alleviate these impediments by drawing on Lockheed Martin's pool of experienced AI engineers who bring specialised knowledge and consultative prowess.

Lockheed Martin's established infrastructure within its AI Factory ecosystem underpins the offerings made available through Astris AI. The Lockheed Martin AI Center engineers supporting Astris AI are under the leadership of Mike Baylor as chief digital and AI officer, along with Greg Forrest serving as director of AI Foundations.

Astris AI chief revenue officer Donna O'Donnell said: "Astris AI is perfectly positioned to deliver AI/MLOps solutions across industries.

"By combining Lockheed Martin's expertise with Astris AI's agile approach, we're enabling organisations to navigate the complexities of the rapidly evolving technology landscape with high assurance AI solutions that deliver secure and reliable interactions, compliance and responsible decision-making."
