CNN's John Berman took umbrage with singer Mariah Carey's declaration that "It's Christmastime," just a day after trick-or-treaters made their candy rounds for Halloween.
"So, apparently, it is now Christmastime because Mariah Carey says so," Berman said Friday. "She put out this video overnight celebrating the 30th anniversary of her hit, All I Want For Christmas is You. She dressed up like the Addams Family, had them all transformed here. I do wonder if this is to draw focus to her song and, maybe, you know, make a little cheddar cheese."
"Listen, don't you come for Mariah Carey," quipped co-host Sara Sidner. "Don't you do it, John Berman!"
"You know, all I want for Christmas is you. You!" he mugged while pointing at the camera.
"You, the viewer. We need them for Christmas!" Sidner responded.
Co-host Kate Bolduan chimed in, "My war is on pumpkin spice, I'm not weighing in on Mariah Carey!"
The singer released an elaborate video via X, formerly Twitter, at midnight Friday, featuring the song that first debuted in 1994. In the video, Carey is dressed as Addams Family matriarch, Morticia, before transforming into a sexy Santa in the snow.
"It's tiiiiiime!" she sings in an impossibly high falsetto.
The song has been dubbed a "holiday classic" and has topped the Billboard charts for five consecutive holiday seasons from 2019-2024.
According to Forbes, "It is the first holiday song to have surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify." And it's estimated that Carey makes at least one cent every time the song is streamed or played.
