CLEVELAND (WJW) - The Cleveland Browns are getting a new quarterback, according to the NFL Network. This comes just days after the team's $230 million quarterback, Deshaun Watson, suffered a season-ending injury.
Reporter Tom Pelissero posted on X early Tuesday morning that the Browns are signing Bailey Zappe off the Kansas City Chief's practice squad. Pelissero cited "sources" for the information and wrote, "With Deshaun Watson's season over and Dorian Thompson-Robinson's status in flux, Jameis Winston could start Sunday vs. Baltimore and Zappe would back him up."
Watson suffered Achilles tendon injury in Sunday's loss to the Bengals.
Jameis Winston has been the team's backup this season. He was replaced by Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who moved ahead of Jameis Winston on the depth chart this week. Thompson-Robinson finished 11 of 24 for 82 yards and two interceptions but left Sunday's game with a finger injury.
Zappe is a former late-round draft pick by New England in 2022. The 25-year-old is now in his 3rd NFL season. He's been predominately a backup for his career.
