Here is a look at the Michigan State football players who have announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal, which officially opens Monday, Dec. 9 and closes Dec. 28. Year in school is as of this season.
This story will be updated as players continue to make offseason decisions.
Talley was the first to enter the portal Dec. 3 after the season ended. The 6-foot-3, 256-pound Philadelphia native had 1.5 sacks among his six tackles this season in 10 appearances after getting five tackles in five games in 2023. It is Talley's second time in the portal, arriving at MSU in 2022 after signing with Penn State and going through the early portion of preseason camp in Happy Valley. The former four-star prospect was required to sit out that season due to NCAA transfer rules because he participated in practice with the Nittany Lions.
Glover, who announced he would enter the portal Dec. 5, opened the season as a starter but missed five games and portions of another due to injuries. The 6-foot-1, 204-pound native of Sarasota, Florida, has two more years of eligibility remaining after catching 15 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns in seven games this season. He was part of MSU's 2022 class and had 14 catches for 261 yards in eight games, including four starts, as a redshirt freshman in 2023 after making one catch for 2 yards in his lone appearance as a true freshman. It is Glover's second time in the portal after entering after the 2023 season but returning to MSU last December.
Sophomore backup long snapper announced his intention to enter the portal Dec. 6 with three years of eligibility remaining. Carson-Wentz got pressed into punt snapping duty after starter Kaden Schickel was lost for the season with an injury against Michigan, and the backup sent a high snap over punter Ryan Eckley's head that helped contribute to the final regular-season loss to Rutgers. It will be the third transfer for sophomore Carson-Wentz, who began his career in 2022 at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne in North Carolina and then moved to another DII school West Georgia in the spring of 2023 before landing at MSU in 2024.
Redshirt freshman announced his intention to transfer Dec. 6 after emerging as a starter late in the season due to Glover's persistent absences. The 6-foot, 175-pound native of Richmond, Virginia, caught 16 passes for 276 yards with two touchdowns, including a 52-yarder against Illinois, while playing in all 12 games and starting four. Johnson played in four games as a true freshman in 2023 to preserve his redshirt.
Announced intention to Rivals.com on Dec. 6, saying he planned to return closer to his home in Tennessee due to family circumstances. The 6-1, 199-pound true freshman made 17 tackles with one pass defended in his six games, which included three starts in MSU's injury-depleted secondary. Thompson joined the list in the finale against Rutgers when he was carted off the field and deemed to have suffered a concussion in the second quarter. Originally committed to Mel Tucker's staff, Thompson signed with Jonathan Smith and the Spartans last December and enrolled in January.
Redshirt freshman announced intention to enter the portal Dec. 6 with three years of eligibility remaining. The 6-2, 188-pound Houston native had just one catch for 16 yards in three appearances this season after playing in four games as a true freshman in 2023 to retain a redshirt.
The 5-11, 186-pound redshirt freshman is a former walk-on from Lansing who contributed mainly on special teams in his two appearances in 2024 after playing four games as a true freshman in 2023 to preserve his redshirt.
