Deshaun Watson's season is over, so the Cleveland Browns are now moving on to Plan B at quarterback.
Jameis Winston served as the team's backup through the first six weeks, but on Sunday, second-year pro Dorian Thompson-Robinson was the No. 2 quarterback, with Winston serving as the third-string/emergency option. When Watson went down with a season-ending torn Achilles in the second quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals, it was Thompson-Robinson who entered the fray. However, after the 2023 fifth-round pick injured his finger later in the game, it was Winston's turn to take over the reins.
He will officially handle them again this week. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Wednesday that Winston will be the team's starter against the Baltimore Ravens Sunday.
Stefanski added that he will wait to see how Thompson-Robinson's finger feels this week in practice before deciding if he or the newly-signed Bailey Zappe will the Browns' No. 2 signal caller this week.
Cleveland will also be breaking in a new play caller on Sunday, with offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey taking over those duties.
Winston, who attempted only one pass in the first six weeks of the season, completed 5-of-11 attempts for 45 yards and a touchdown in last weekend's 21-14 loss.
After the game, he criticized Browns fans who cheered for Watson's injury, earning heat on himself in the process given Watson's history of sexual assault allegations and misconduct.
"I'm grateful that I had the chance to serve Deshaun, but I am very upset with the reaction to the man that has had the world against him for the last four years," Winston said, via Camryn Justice of News 5 Cleveland. "And he put his body and life on the line for this city every single day."
