A Las Vegas man has been charged with possession of a loaded firearm and high-capacity magazine after deputies assigned to former President Donald Trump's rally Saturday "contacted" him at a checkpoint Saturday.
Deputies contacted 49-year-old Vem Miller at 4:59 p.m., a resident of Las Vegas, who drove a black SUV at a checkpoint at the intersection of Avenue 52 and Celebration Drive, according to a news release from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office on Sunday.
Miller illegally had a shotgun, a loaded handgun and a high-capacity magazine. He was arrested and booked at the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio.
Trump spoke to a crowd of several thousand people at the Calhoun Ranch in Riverside County, just outside Coachella, at 5:30 p.m. -- about half an hour after his remarks were scheduled to begin.
"This incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or attendees of the event," according to the news release.
No additional information is available for release at this time, Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez said in an email to the Desert Sun on Sunday following questions regarding why Miller had the weapons and a high-capacity magazine and whether he intended to be at the rally.
People with information about this incident are encouraged to call Deputy Coronado at the Palm Desert Sheriff's Station at 760-836-1600.
