Capitals place forward Spencer Smallman on NHL waivers

The Washington Capitals placed forward Spencer Smallman on waivers Thursday to officially send him to the AHL's Hershey Bears if he clears.

The Capitals signed Smallman to a one-year, two-way contract on the second day of NHL free agency in July. Any team can claim him over the next 24 hours.

Smallan did not participate in Washington's Training Camp due to injury but, per Bears Hockey Nation, has been skating with the Bears in a red non-contact jersey at Hershey's camp. The Capitals placing him on waivers signals he has been activated off of season-opening injured reserve and has been cleared to return to play.

The 27-year-old forward was part of the last non-Hershey team to win the Calder Cup after winning with the Chicago Wolves in 2022. He has spent parts of the previous six seasons in the AHL, the last two with the Colorado Eagles.

In 53 games for the Eagles last year, Smallman recorded 21 points (12g, 9a). The Carolina Hurricanes originally drafted him in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Hershey's 2024-25 season begins on Saturday against the Cleveland Monsters. FloHockey will stream the game for free on all its social media accounts.
