Colorado man gets 60 months for assaulting federal officer

DURANGO, Colo. (KREX) - A Colorado man was sentenced to 60 months in prison after he fought with an officer earlier this year.

Daniel Heli, 44, of Towaoc will also serve three years of supervised release after he pleaded guilty to one count of assaulting a federal officer.

"This attack on a federal officer simply doing his job is unacceptable. We fully support the officer who is a victim in this case and are steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice in cases involving assaults on law enforcement officers," FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek said in a press release. "Such acts will not go unanswered, and we will work tirelessly to ensure accountability."

On April 5, a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer responded to the Ute Mountain Ute Casino after receiving a report of an intoxicated person, later identified as Lehi.

Lehi lunged at the officer and hit him in the face, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. When other security personnel responded, the Colorado man continued to fight until he was subdued by officers.

Lehi has a history of assaulting law enforcement officers, according to court documents.

The FBI Durango Field Office also investigated the incident.
