CORALVILLE -- Katie Scheckel and Emma Eekhoff, they did it all.
Really, and truly. The jaw-dropping numbers bore that out.
How about a double triple-double?
Fifth-ranked Pella got the maximum mileage out of its two setters, and rallied past No. 4 Clear Creek Amana, 19-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 15-9, in a Class 4A quarterfinal at the state volleyball tournament Monday night at Xtream Arena.
"I knew we could come back," Scheckel said. "We wanted to go to practice (Tuesday), and we wanted to come back here and play Wednesday."
The Dutch (40-7) erased a two-set-to-one deficit and march into Wednesday's semifinal battle against No. 12 Sergeant Bluff-Luton (22-13), which pulled the upset of the tournament, a five-set shocker over No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier.
"(SBL) looked really good," Scheckel said. "I'm ready to go play them."
Digest these numerals for a moment: Scheckel amassed 23 kills, 25 assists and 25 digs.
As for Eekhoff ... 11 kills, 16 assists, 29 digs.
"After the first two sets, we started to play a lot more loose," Eekhoff said. "We told ourselves to act like we own this place."
Clear Creek Amana (37-8) was in a decent position to close this one out in four sets. The Clippers led Game 4, 7-3, then the Dutch turned the match upside down with an eight-point run.
"That (set) had a lot of runs," CCA's Averie Lower said. "We just tried to stay positive and energized."
Pella scored three straight points for a 4-3 lead in Game 5, and the Clippers didn't lead again.
Still, it was a season of progress for the Clippers, who rebuilt nicely after graduating much of their roster from last year's 46-1, state-semifinal team.
And it was a setup season for what could be a big 2025.
"A lot of people didn't expect us back here," CCA Coach Jackie Clubb said. "But the kids rose to the occasion and make and did really well.
Lower said, "We had so many underclassmen, and we had some seniors that really stepped up. I couldn't be more proud of them."
One of the area's top junior athletes, Lower counted 20 kills, and a good number of them came from the back row. Elizabeth Timmerman added 10 kills, and Emily Henderson posted 41 assists.
