Former Batman Actor Calls Out Joker: Folie a Deux's Controversial Ending For Being Done Before

Warning: This article contains some spoilers for Joker: Folie à Deux

A former Batman star has weighed in on the controversy around the ending of Joker: Folie a Deux - and made a note that Todd Phillips' heavily criticized sequel is not the first to have pulled the trick of playing the fake Joker card. David Mazouz may not be one of the names that instantly comes to mind when asked to name a Batman actor, but he did don the cape and cowl very briefly in the final season of the hit series Gotham, and he recently shared his thoughts on the movie on his TikTok account.

Mazouz begins his video by saying that he believes the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-led comic book movie has been "over-hated," going on to explain that as a character study of the Joker, there is a lot of showmanship about Arthur Fleck - as that is what the Joker is all about, turning pain and misery into "art" with laughter and song and "show." However, after commenting that the film's big trial scenes are perhaps something of a let-down, and could be partly to blame for the movie's dismal performance at the box office, he finishes off the video with a little stinger, saying:

And no spoilers, but the ending...Gotham has done that before. It has. It has....it just has.

Joker's Sequel Did Not Live Up to Expectations Close

For much of the year, it seemed like the MCU and Warner Bros. DC movie franchise - whatever it currently is before James Gunn steps up to the plate in 2025 - were going to reap the rewards by pulling back their output to just two big, highly anticipated movies. For Marvel, Deadpool & Wolverine hit the mark over the summer, becoming one of the highest grossing movies of the year and one of Marvel Studios' biggest critical successes after two years of very mixed reviews. However, the arrival of Joker: Folie à Deux in cinemas at the beginning of October was a very different story.

Joker: Folie à Deux initially missed the mark with early critical reviews, and nothing that followed helped to turn things around for the $200 million movie as it crashed and burned on its opening weekend. Making just $38 million domestically on its opening weekend was not even the worst of it, as the humiliations for the movie kept coming thick and fast. Its Rotten Tomatoes scores sank lower, until it surpassed some of the most ridiculed comic book movies of recent years, and on its second weekend in cinemas it was easily overtaken by Damien Leonie's low-budget gore-fest Terrifier 3, which claimed the top spot on its opening weekend with any real challenge.

News of what Joker: Folie à Deux could lose for Warner Bros. comes after the film suffered a steep 81 percent decline at the box office.

Now Joker: Folie à Deux is ready to head to home media, within a month of its cinematic release. To put this in context, Deadpool & Wolverine arrived in cinemas on July 25, and has only been released to buy or rent on digital media on October 1 - more than two months later. While the performance of these two films could not be further apart right now, it will be interesting how many people check out Joker: Folie à Deux on its digital release, and its subsequent streaming release a little further down the line.

Joker: Folie à Deux is the sequel to Todd Phillips' critically acclaimed comic book thriller Joker. Reprising his Academy Award-winning performance as the failed comedian Arthur Fleck, Joaquin Phoenix revisits the iconic DC character alongside Lady Gaga, who makes her debut as Joker's lover Harley Quinn in this standalone continuity of the DC Universe.
