Not Yet, Apple Fans, Not Yet

Apple was expected to release iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS 15.2 today, but the company instead issued another round of release candidates. So the final releases of these updates will have to wait for a few more days, it seems.

Apple clearly wants to get this one right: It shipped new generation iPhones in September without Apple Intelligence, and then delivered the first round of new AI features in late October. But those first AI features were mostly underwhelming.

iOS 18.2-and iPadOS 18.2 and macOS 15.2, all of which share similar Apple Intelligence features-is a much bigger deal, at least on the few iPhones-the iPhone 16 series plus the iPhone 15 Pros-that support Apple Intelligence. Key new AI features include the Image Playground generative AI image creator, Genmoji for creating custom emojis, and ChatGPT integration with Siri and Writing Tools.

Many apps are getting upgrades, too, not all of which are AI-based. Camera Control is getting Visual Intelligence so you can learn more about the places you see through the viewfinder, Notes is getting a new Image Wand feature for turning notes and sketches into images, Photos is getting several improvements, including frame-by-frame video scrubbing, and Safari is getting new personalization features.

Apple is also expanding language support for Apple Intelligence, slightly, to include localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK.

There's more to come, of course. Once it puts iOS 18.2 behind it, Apple still plans to ship at least two more major Apple Intelligence milestones in early 2025 across supported platforms.
