UVU senior Faith Webber kicks the ball during the WAC game against Grand Canyon at Clyde Field in Orem on Monday, Oct. 21, 2024.
Those numbers told the story of Monday's WAC women's soccer showdown at Clyde Field in Orem between the top teams in the league as UVU faced Grand Canyon.
Both squads had identical 5-0 records in league play and 11-4-1 marks overall. The Wolverines may have won eight in a row -- but the Lopes weren't far behind with a five-game winning streak.
This night would belong to UVU, though, as senior Faith Webber (who wears No. 2) scored two goals as the Wolverines rolled to the 3-0 win over Grand Canyon. That final tally was fitting, since this is also the third consecutive regular season championship for UVU.
"It's just crazy for me, having had this moment every single year I've been a part of this team," Webber said. "It doesn't get old, and this group really deserves it."
Wolverine head coach Chris Lemay expressed his pride in the 2024 squad for coming together and continuing to have success.
"It proves that we're a consistent program that's going to compete year in and year out," Lemay said. "I'm really proud of this group, because it's a much different group than the last couple of league championships. We've had a lot of players this year who are young step up and step into big time roles."
He saw the evolution on display against a very good Lopes squad on Monday, one that made big-time plays at both ends of the field.
"I think the best way to describe the way that we played was really mature and composed," Lemay said. "I thought we managed the game well. I thought our possession was exceptional at times. I thought we did a really nice job of recognizing when we had a moment that we could go forward and be dangerous. I thought we created good goal scoring opportunities but the biggest thing is we capitalized."
The first goal often sets the tone and Webber, along with senior Manthy Brady and sophomore Nixan Jackson, made that happen in the 23rd minute.
Brady was the instigator, weaving past a Lope defender and leaping over another to get some space in the Grand Canyon penalty box.
She knocked the ball across the face of the goal, where Jackson was charging in. The sophomore was the connector and distractor, getting just a piece of it to keep it rolling through.
And, as she has been for her entire career, Webber was the finisher. She was ready at the back post to put the ball into the net and give UVU a lead it wouldn't relinquish in the impressive 3-0 Wolverine win.
"I was just kind of in the right place at the right time," Webber said. "I watched my teammates build the ball of the field with their composure. I know that I got the label on it for me but I mean from the back line to Mandy's performance, it was just perfect to create that goal."
That goal gave UVU the lead but the outcome was still in doubt until the final minutes. Fortunately the Wolverine defense was nearly impenetrable, giving the visitors almost no looks.
"We have struggled to not concede and so to get a shutout tonight is definitely one of the highlights for us," Lemay said. "I thought all of our defenders were very disciplined and it wasn't just the back four. I thought we defended well in the midfield. I thought we defended well even from our front line to make it difficult on them to break us down. But our back line gets a lot of credit for this evening's performance,"
UVU put the game away down the stretch as in the 79th minute senior Quincy Bonds got a cross in from the left side and sophomore Ashley Garcia knifed in to redirect it inside the near post.
Just two minutes later, Webber added her second goal after taking a pass from junior Ruby Hladek.
While the entire team is thrilled with both the win and securing the regular-season title, Webber said this is just one step toward what UVU wants to accomplish in the 2024 season.
"It's really fun to win the regular season," Webber said. "It's a body of work, but we've come up short in the in the tournament the last few years. I think that's what we're really set on. We'll celebrate this, but not for too long because we've got to be ready."
Lemay said he believes the type of performance the Wolverines had against Grand Canyon is exactly what needs to happen in the tournament.
"I think we've got to make sure that we take care of the defensive side of it because we're peaking up top," Lemay said. "We'll score goals so if we can continue to keep playing great defense, I think we've got a lot more wins in front of us this year."
UVU (12-4-1) will conclude the regular season when it plays at Seattle on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. MT.
