MMA media members Ben Davis and Oscar Willis threw down bare knuckle in Marbella on Saturday night.
The brave duo are best known for their work from the commentary box to press row, but they opted to get in the ring themselves for a big night on DAZN. Willis, who is nominated for Journalist of the Year at the MMA Awards this December, had fought in MMA once while Davis had competed across disciplines.
Davis is best known for commentating on UFC Fight Pass and Misfits Boxing, while Willis is the man behind The Mac Life's big success. Watching at ringside was his boss Conor McGregor, who also promoted the event, and it was a successful night for the Brit, landing a first round stoppage.
A capacity crowd at the famed Marbella Arena packed in for the rare fighting showcase, and it was Willis who started the stronger. He flew out of the traps and within 40 seconds had landed a big knockdown, which was followed quickly by another.
Davis was down a third time moments later, but continued to fight on and insisted he was fine. However, that ended up being all she wrote as the referee waved off the contest, awarding Willis a stunning early win.
The pair embraced after the final bell, but were not given a chance to speak on the microphone as the card rumbled on. Later in the night, former boxing world champion Austin Trout is set to defend his BKFC title.
Willis and Davis were lauded by members of the media and fighters for their bravery in the build-up to the fight. But one man who was skeptical of the meeting was UFC boss Dana White, who questioned their sanity.
Bare knuckle boxing is arguably the most vicious combat sport in the world, and while White was concerned about the fight, he admitted he would be watching. "What? Don't do it," he laughed when he was asked about the bout.
"What? Is that why he [Oscar Willis] is not here? He's always here. So he is fighting bare-knuckle, when? However, once he was informed about the matchup and why the pair were fighting by journalist Amy Kaplan, he agreed to watch live.
"This Saturday?" He asked. "Well, he's a great kid and I wish him all the luck in the world, hope he doesn't get his face busted up. Who's he fighting? What! Holy s***, alright."
