What number will Davante Adams wear with Jets? Why WR may need to switch from No. 17 in New York

What number will Davante Adams wear with Jets? Why WR may need to switch from No. 17 in New York

Davante Adams has been traded to the Jets and fans are again set to watch the connection between him and QB Aaron Rodgers, who were teammates for eight seasons with the Packers.

And while Adams and Rodgers are reunited, things will look different this time around. The duo will be in a different shade of green and wearing different numbers from their Green Bay days.

Photoshops of Adams wearing No. 17 are quickly circulating but it appears he will not be able to don his signature number in New York. As Adams moves on to the third team of his 11-year NFL career, he may need to switch numbers for the first time.

As it stands, No. 17 is unavailable with the Jets because it belongs to rookie WR Malachi Corley.

Corley, a third-round pick in 2024, has one catch for four yards this season. There is no precedent of midseason number changes in the NFL, meaning Corley will likely keep No. 17 through the 2024 season and Adams will need to switch numbers.

It is unclear what number Adams will wear with New York. During his standout career at Fresno State, Adams wore No. 15, which is currently available.

No. 15 may be the best choice for Adams, as his NFL and high school numbers are also taken.

Adams wore No. 10 in high school, but that number is currently worn by Allen Lazard, another former Packer teammate Adams will reunite with in New York. No. 4, Adams' high school basketball number, is currently worn by Jets CB D.J. Reed.

A number change could be the best way to usher in a new chapter for Adams. Rodgers, who famously wore No. 12 throughout his time in Green Bay, switched to No. 8 in New York because 12 is retired for Joe Namath. Despite receiving Namath's blessing to wear the retired number, Rodgers stuck with No. 8.

In a new location, the all-too-familiar Adams-Rodgers connection stands to look different in more ways than one.
