"He was going downhill fast ," said Cuyahoga County Sheriff Deputy Jim Decredico . "He would have probably passed away had we not got him to the vet as quickly as we did."
Decredico said the incident happened on Sept. 6. His partner, K-9 Felix, and a K-9 from Cleveland, both overdosed while serving a search warrant at a home.
"While executing the warrant, a Cleveland Police K-9 was exposed to suspected Fentanyl," said Sgt. Wilfredo Diaz, Cleveland Police public information officer.
Decredico said he noticed a change in Felix moments after the search.
"I work under CGIC, which is the Crime Gun Intelligence Center. My dog and a few other dogs work out of that facility," Decredico explained. "We were doing search for illegal drugs that morning when this happened. There was some stuff he alerted to in the basement and then we ran him on the cars outside. I noticed his searching pattern was changing."
Decredico placed Felix in the cruiser to rest. He went to check on him about ten minutes later and noticed Felix was swaying back and forth. He said Felix was also having trouble walking.
"We gave him Narcan and got him right to the emergency clinic," Decredico explained. He said Felix was then hooked up to an IV and treated. The Cleveland K-9 was also rushed for treatment, according to Cleveland police.
Both dogs have fully recovered and are now back to work. Meanwhile, Cleveland police tell us one person was arrested during that search and the investigation is continuing.
