Today, Willie Nelson released his rendition of Beck's "Lost Cause," which is part of his forthcoming 76th solo studio album (and 153rd album overall) Last Leaf On The Tree.
It was a solo write by Beck, and included on his 2002 fifth major-label studio album Sea Change, and peaked at #36 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart in March of 2003.
And it certainly fits in with the overall message of the record, where Willie will tackle the finality of life in recent years and passing of time, finding himself turning 91 years old this year. His son Micah, who is in the producer's chair for this project, says that's the "through-line" of the album:
"There are little side-quests, but that became the through-line -- facing death with grace."
While a world without Willie Nelson is not something I want to think about, he's never been one to shy away from what's on his heart and mind and he's sticking to that with each release, including the lead single, a gorgeous, heartfelt cover of the Flaming Lips classic "Do You Realize??"
The 13-song tracklist includes a mix of both covers and originals, and was recorded at his famous Pedernales Studios near his home outside of Austin, Texas, as well as at the Hen House in Venice, California.
Of course, Willie plays his trusty acoustic guitar Trigger throughout, and guest musicians include Raphael, Lanois on pedal steel, and former Doors drummer John Densmore and Senegalese musician Magatte Sow on percussion.
Last Leaf On The Tree is due out everywhere on November 1st, and it's shaping up to be another heartfelt and very meaningful project from the red headed stranger.
