Man arrested after breaking into police officer's home

BESSEMER, Pa. (WKBN) -- A man is facing a number of charges after reports detail him breaking into the home of a police officer and fighting him.

Pennsylvania State Police's New Castle post was dispatched to a home on 5th Street around 10:30 Wednesday night for reports of a burglary in process. While troopers were on the way, they were told the home belonged to a police officer.

Reports state the officer was attempting to place the suspect, identified as Evan Degaton, 33, in custody, but Degaton was actively fighting him.

PSP tells First News the break-in was sparked by a domestic incident nearby, where a female victim of domestic violence ran to the home for help because she knew an officer lived there. Degaton then followed her to the home, where he broke in and then got involved in the physical altercation with the officer, according to police.

Troopers arrived on scene and placed Degaton in custody, where reports state he then spit on a trooper.

Authorities tell First News the victim fled the scene and later received treatment for her injuries.

Court records show Degaton is facing felony charges of aggravated assault, assault of a law enforcement officer, burglary; and misdemeanor charges of simple assault, criminal trespass and resisting arrest.

Degaton is scheduled to be in court Dec. 19. Bond was set at $300,000.
