WhatsApp beta adds reverse image search through Google

The latest WhatsApp beta build adds a new feature that will give users the option to send a recieved image through a reverse image Google Search.

Google Search has had reverse image search for some time, and it can be an invaluable tool. The feature allows users to search the web for an image, which will give a little background on whether or not that image is original or has been seen on other websites or social media.

According to a report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is adding an option in-app to send an image to Google's reverse image search. This option is available in build 2.24.23.13 and is available on the Google Play Store for those in the beta program.

When viewing an image, users will be able to tap the three-dot menu at the top of the screen to display their options. Hitting "search on web" will give the user the option to send the attachment to Google Search in what looks to be a direct integration. The WhatsApp app notes that the message attachment is still confidential and won't be shared with Meta or any other program/app besides Google.

A reverse image search is also very much possible through Google's Circle to Search. Still, the in-app function will prove to be useful for those who either don't have Circle to Search or users who want a more dedicated way to check an image's validity.

It looks as though the feature is server-side within the build, meaning some users on the latest version still may not see the feature. That number is decreasing, though, as more users are getting the "search on web" function.
