Odd-shaped, colorful specialty pumpkins are the new trend this fall

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) -- During the cool crisp fall season, many people head out to a pumpkin patch to pick their perfect pumpkin -- And more and more, people are choosing specialty pumpkins.

Those colorful, wart-dotted, odd-shaped squash are jumping off the shelves.

"The person who really wants to deck out their front porch or entrance is definitely more interested in these unique heirloom varieties. They are growing rapidly in popularity," Lyndsey Bridgers, the marketing director at Merrifield Garden Center said.

Most people buy the heirloom varieties for their holiday décor.

Some are stackable and flat. Others are rounded or even peaked and some have appendages. They come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes.

Perhaps the oddest of the gourds are the ones with bumpy skin.

"These are actually bred for this quality, for their warty quality,"Bridgers said.

You'll pay a little more per pound for the heirloom varieties however, the traditional orange pumpkins are still the biggest sellers.

All pumpkins are edible. They taste a lot like butternut squash- but some are sweeter, and others more savory. And they pack a powerful nutritional punch: high in fiber, proteins, carbohydrates, antioxidants like beta carotene, vitamins, and minerals.

There's a color, size, and shape for every decorative idea you have this fall.
