Now, for the first time in history, scientists, researchers, and paleontologists are celebrating their landmark discovery of dinosaur fossils discovered in Hong Kong. Their origin: from the Cretaceous period about 145 million to 66 million years ago, and believed to be the bones of a "large-aged" dinosaur.

Dinosaur fossils were discovered for the first time in Hong Kong
The site where the large rock containing the dinosaur fossils was discovered was in the northeastern waters of the UNESCO-listed Geopark in the Chinese territory's Port Island, per authorities.
Hong Kong's Secretary of Development Bernadette Linn said that "the discovery is of great significance and provides new evidence for research on paleoecology in Hong Kong," the statement read.

While experts in Hong Kong have located plant life and fish from the dinosaur era, the geology and climate of Hong Kong have made it quite difficult to locate actual bones from the gargantuan, reptile species.
Historical Discovery Leads to Closure of Port Island

It goes without saying that, due to the importance of this historical discovery, and given there could very well be additional dinosaur fossils on or around Port Island in Hong Kong, authorities have closed the island to the public until excavations and further research are completed.

Until then, the recently discovered dinosaur fossils will be on display at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Center in Tsim Sha Tsui beginning tomorrow.
