Gophers jump to No. 1 in latest hockey poll

After a dominant showing over the Michigan Wolverines this past weekend, the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's hockey team has jumped to the top spot in the latest USCHO hockey poll.

Minnesota received 38 of the 50 first-place votes, leaping over Boston College, Michigan State and Denver after being ranked No. 4 last week.

The Maroon and Gold was excellent this past weekend, completing a series shutout to sweep the sixth-ranked Wolverines at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

On Friday night, Nathan Airey collected his first collegiate shutout and Matthew Wood led six Gophers with multi-point games in Minnesota's 6-0 win over Michigan. Then, on Saturday, Liam Souliere made 22 saves while Sam Rinzel and Jimmy Snuggerud added goals in Minnesota's 2-0 win.

Michigan dropped to No. 8 in the latest poll after getting swept by the Gophers.

Minnesota's schedule doesn't get any easier in the short-term. Next up for the Maroon and Gold is a battle with third-ranked Michigan State at 3M Arena at Mariucci this weekend. Friday's contest will be broadcast on Big Ten Network and the Fox Sports app starting at 7:30 p.m. with Saturday's game starting at 5 p.m. on FOX9+ and streaming via B1G+.
