Police Arrest Skokie Man, 28, In Oakwood Avenue Shooting

A 28-year-old man from Skokie has been charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm in connection with reports of a shooting in a quiet Des Plaines residential neighborhood on Monday, Dec. 9.

Police said that on Dec. 9, Dakane L. Masters of 9047 Lamon Ave., Skokie traveled to the 1500 block of Oakwood Ave. where he exited his vehicle and entered a fenced-in yard on Oakwood. Initially, police responded to a call about shots being fired in the 1500 block of Walnut Ave., which led to the lockdown of Central Elementary School.

Police said that the suspect fired four rounds from a firearm toward another residence in the 1500 block of Oakwood striking the residence. Masters' vehicle was identified on several surveillance cameras, as well as FLOCK cameras, prior to, during, and leaving the scene immediately after the shooting took place.

The investigation revealed that Masters was on electronic monitoring from a previous arrest, said reports. The executive director of Emergency Communications with Cook County ETSB provided Masters' location at the time of the shooting. Masters' location pinged in the yard in the 1500 block of Oakwood Ave., directly across from the residence that was shot.

Investigators went to Masters' residence and waited in the area for him to return. At approximately 4:10 p.m. on the same day, Masters arrived at his residence and was taken into custody. Masters subsequently admitted to being in Des Plaines with his vehicle, but not to committing the shooting, police said.

A search warrant was executed on Masters' vehicle, and a stolen 9mm pistol was located under the front passenger seat. Clothing consistent with what the offender was seen wearing was located in the trunk. Additionally, in the spare tire compartment of the vehicle, blue-colored, latex-style, gloves were located, which were also consistent with what the offender was seen wearing in surveillance footage.

Upon review of Masters' history, police said they learned that he had prior convictions for weapon offenses, classifying him as an Armed Habitual Criminal.

With the assistance of the Cook County 911 Center and members of the Cook County Sheriff's Data Driven Strategies Unit Des Plaines police were able to locate and take the suspect into custody in a much safer manner.

The Des Plaines Police Department, in cooperation with the Cook County State's Attorney's office, charged Masters with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm/Occupied, Armed Habitual Criminal, and Unlawful Use of Possession of Weapons by a Felon.
