Flight MH370: Malaysia to resume search for wreckage

STORY: Malaysia said on Friday it will resume the search for the wreckage of flight MH370 - more than 10 years after it disappeared.

:: 2015

The flight, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014.

It's become one of the greatest aviation mysteries.

The fresh hunt was proposed by exploration firm Ocean Infinity, six years on from their last attempt.

Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the new agreement is expected to be finalized in early 2025.

"The Cabinet has agreed in principle to accept the proposal from Ocean Infinity United Kingdom to proceed with seabed search operations to locate the wreckage of flight MH370, in a new area estimated at 15,000 square kilometres in the southern Indian Ocean. This endeavour will be based on the 'no find, no fee' principle...The proposed new search area identified by Ocean Infinity is based on the latest information and data analysis conducted by experts and researchers."

He said Ocean Infinity would receive $70 million if wreckage found is substantive.

The captain signed off as the Boeing 777 entered Vietnamese air space; soon after its transponder was turned off.

Military radar showed the plane left its flight path to fly back over northern Malaysia then out into the Andaman Sea before turning south.

Initially, investigators considered that the aircraft could have been deliberately taken off course.

Debris, some confirmed to be from the aircraft, has washed up along the coast of Africa and on islands in the Indian Ocean.

Over 150 Chinese passengers were on the flight and 50 Malaysians.

As well as citizens from the United States and Europe, among others.

Relatives have demanded compensation from firms including Malaysia Airlines, Boeing, aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce and the Allianz insurance group.
