Re: Time to Step Away From AARP?

Re: Time to Step Away From AARP?

Maybe it's time to stay away from AARP, as well? If they are doing this with UHC, how else are they covertly working to harm us?

In a fantastic piece of news, we learn about a major reason for UnitedHealthcare's success: An organization that markets itself as an advocate for the elderly is fronting for UnitedHealthcare. (Can you guess what organization it is?)

That would be the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). Almost 38 million members ... who trust AARP for guidance and advice.

It turns out that AARP recommends to its membership UnitedHealthcare and only UnitedHealthcare. Because UnitedHealthcare is awesome? Nope. Because UnitedHealthcare pays the AARP. (But you know all this, AARP.)

"UnitedHealth kicks back 4.95 percent of premium income from AARP subscribers to AARP. And the numbers are staggering. ...AARP made $289.3 million from member dues, but $1.134 billion from kickbacks from insurers, of which the lion's share, $905 million, was from health insurers."

So, AARP makes from "health" insurers more than triple what it makes from members. AARP is an insurance marketing scheme masquerading as an advocacy group. (But, again, you know all this, AARP, and choose to do it anyway.)
