Everclear is bringing pals '90s Marcy Playground and Jimmie's Chicken Shack to Birmingham's Workplay on Oct. 24.
The musical landscape underwent a seismic shift in the early 1990s. After a decade of shiny synth bands and spandex smothered pinups, the 1980s artists came to the same realization as corporate America: alternative radio and bands were instantaneously profitable. Names like Cobain, Corgan and Reznor became part of our lexicon and filled the coffers of radio, record retail and oddly enough, fashion magazines and clothing stores.
Alternative musicians were a mixed bag. R.E.M. was pulling huge numbers, grunge and its ilk were ever present on whatever media one preferred. Sonic Youth was cooler than you ever could be and The Posies ruled my speakers for longer than I'd care to admit. The Seattle big four could do no wrong; and the "Man in the Box" curb stomped anything motley or poisonous.
