Donte DiVincenzo made his stance clear prior to his first game against his former team the New York Knicks: no hard feelings. But that doesn't appear to be the case. The former Knicks' starter and current New York assistant coach, Rick Brunson, had to be separated after the preseason matinee on October 13.
New York beat Minnesota, 115-110. But they couldn't slow down DiVincenzo. The former Knick shined, recording 15 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal in 26 minutes of action in the exhibition.
DiVincenzo was traded as apart of the deal that brought Karl-Anthony Towns to the Big Apple. Julius Randle, the other half of the package sent to the Timberwolves, is recovering from shoulder surgery, and didn't suit up for the October 13 game.
It's unclear what triggered the dust-up between DiVincenzo and Jalen Brunson's father, who's been with the team since 2022. But it's clear that as much as everyone tried to downplay the meeting pregame, tensions rising was all but an inevitability.
Asked after the game about Brunson's comments towards him, DiVincenzo pleaded ignorance and denied the opportunity to set the record straight. "I don't fully know what was said, there were a lot people there," DiVincenzo told SNY on October 13. "But I really have no comment on the situation."
New York and Minnesota won't meet again until a December 19th game on the Timberwolves' home floor. With things so unresolved after their first meeting, fans should expect more fireworks during the regular season matchup.
