NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) - The candidates for Congress in Connecticut's 2nd District squared off in a debate Thursday night.
Channel 3 partnered with The Day of New London newspaper and the League of Women Voters to put on the debate between incumbent Democratic Rep. Joe Courtney and Republican challenger Mike France.
Courtney and France faced off at Connecticut College in New London.
The debate covered a lot, including affordable housing, immigration, women's rights, and more key issues on a lot of voters' minds.
The Democrat has represented Connecticut's 2nd District since 2006.
He argued his track record when it came to job creation in a district full of big companies like Electric Boat.
France made a case about inflation, including how much things cost and how many Americans have been struggling. He put the blame on Democrats like Courtney.
"We saw inflation rise to 9 percent, something we haven't seen in decades," France said. "We saw mortgages rise; some we haven't seen in over 30 years. These are the impacts of failed economic policies."
"In my opinion, the biggest cost issue for folks is housing," Courtney argued. "The way to solve a shortage of housing is build more housing. In Washington, I've been working with home builders of Connecticut and advocates for more construction with tax credits for mixed income housing."
