Object thrown from Cleveland overpass shatters windshield

CLEVELAND (WJW) -- A 26-year-old Cleveland man and one of his friends were on their way home on Saturday night when they drove under a rail overpass on Carnegie Avenue near East 61st Street.

That's when someone threw a heavy metal object off of the overpass, striking the man's windshield.

"I mean, just immediate shock -- just instantaneously, something just shattering," said the victim, who did not want to be identified out of concern for his safety. "The windshield and massive hole in it and no idea what was going on.

"Knowing of previous stories of similar things and people dying from that kind of thing -- it's real shocking."

The victim pulled over to check on the damage and that's when his friend saw two people on the overpass.

"We were like, 'All right, get back in the car and start going,' because we didn't want to have anything more happen to us," he said.

Once he saw the damage and the object that was thrown, the victim realized that he and his friend were fortunate that they were not injured or killed.

"It's supposed to be an anchor for the railroad ties, so it actually keeps the rails on the track," he said.

The victim filed a report with Cleveland police and spoke with an investigator with the railroad.

"That piece of metal is like 15 pounds. That kind of thing falling and hitting one of us would have just ended it. Like, that's pretty scary," he said.

After the victim shared his terrifying story on social media, he heard from other Clevelanders whose cars had been hit by objects thrown from the very same overpass.

While grateful that he and his friend were not harmed, the victim is not happy that he could not drive his car for three days and is disappointed that he is paying for a new windshield out of pocket. He said he shared his story with FOX 8 viewers as a public service.

"I'd like to be able to make sure other people are aware and spread that sort of warning," he said. "People could have a similar incident and, again, it land in the wrong place, it could end someone's life, so I'm trying to make sure people are aware of that when they're driving through."
