MIAMI -- The pomp and circumstance were on display for the Heat on Wednesday as they opened the season against Orlando. Miami was not only starting its 2024-25 campaign; it was also honoring long-time Heat president Pat Riley.
The Heat came out in "embarrassing" fashion, losing 116-97 to Orlando and spoiling Riley's ceremony
Fortunately for the Heat, there is not too much time to ruminate on the loss. There are still 81 games to go, and they will try to regroup and bounce back for the season's first road game against Charlotte at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
"We're way beyond that," Heat coach Spoelstra said on Friday. "I think we have a mature team. We took a day off -- first of all we enjoyed the post-party with Pat. We've got to compartmentalize. It was still a special evening, and we wanted to celebrate that, even after the game. And then yesterday actually was good. We had a full day off. Then we came in here and worked at it. That's what this team is about. You work on things and do it with an intentionality and get better. ... The great thing about it is we have a game tomorrow night and we have an opportunity to do something different and better on the road. "
Wednesday's loss was an all-around struggle. Miami stars Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo combined for just 12 points.
"We're not reinventing ourselves. We've not developed a new offense," Spoelstra said. "But we're making it, hopefully, more layered, with more sophistication, making reads that are tougher for the defense. Getting the ball to Jimmy and allowing him to manipulate a defense or manipulate a matchup or manipulate the bonus. When I say the word 'manipulate,' it is in every bit of the attack in a sense. All of that is good for our team. We didn't get to that enough, clearly. We didn't get to it enough with Bam. These are all things that we'll work out.
The Heat's defense also faltered. Magic third-year star Paolo Banchero notched a double-double, scoring 33 points with 11 rebounds.
"It just wasn't one of our more active or big disposition games," Spoelstra said. "Ultimately, our defense is one that the other team, you want them to feel you. It's not necessarily going to be the metrics like steals or deflections every single time. It's more about tough things, being physical, getting teams out of what they typically want to do. At every point of attack that we're there, and that wasn't the case. You do have to credit them. They're a downhill team. They also knocked down a bunch of threes in that game, so they had both things clicking. Then if they missed a shot, they had all the second-chance opportunities. We pride ourselves on that side of the floor. We have to be better."
Despite the deflating home opener, the Heat will hope to learn from those Game 1 mistakes and come out with more urgency against the Hornets on Saturday.
"We'll watch film," guard Terry Rozier said. "We pick up on the things that we missed. Got to play with more urgency, and it starts with me. But we ain't going to go 82-0. We lost one game. We've just got to go forward and worry about the next one. That's the special thing about this league. We've got to take care of the next one. That's the most important thing."
