LOWELL -- One person died Tuesday afternoon during an accident involving equipment at a construction site in the Kingston Ridge subdivision, according to Lowell Fire Chief Christopher Gamblin.
Firefighters initially responded to a report of a person in a trench in cardiac arrest, he said.
"While en route and with limited information as to the extent of the injuries of the person in trench, or if the trench collapsed, the District 1 Technical Rescue Team was requested to scene," Gamblin said.
Firefighters arrived on scene to find the person was not trapped, but had been fatally struck by an excavator, according to the chief.
The call to the rescue team was cancelled and the scene was turned over to Lowell police, who declined comment Wednesday morning, citing an ongoing investigation.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released by the Lake County Coroner's Office.
