Sprouts Farmers Market opens in York County, selling fresh, organic foods

Bob Houser made a final run Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024 with his sno ball business after 60 years.

Sprouts Farmers Market, known for its focus on natural and organic foods, has opened its first location in central Pennsylvania.

The new store opened recently in the Crossroads shopping center at 351 Loucks Road in Manchester Township. Sprouts says it offers a fresh alternative for those looking for local, wholesome groceries without breaking the bank.

"Back in 2002, we opened our first store in an effort to make natural foods accessible to everyone," reads promotional material for the supermarket chain.

Sprouts has more than 380 stores nationwide, and the new Manchester Township location offers a wide range of produce, organic products and natural groceries in a spacious, easy-to-navigate store layout.

Sprouts is sourcing its local produce from seven Pennsylvania farms: Harnish Farms, Frecon Farms, Stauffer Huling Farms, Hess Brothers Fruit Co., Lady Moon Farms, Copenhaver Produce and King Family Farms, some of which are based in neighboring counties. The focus on local suppliers means fresher produce for customers, Sprouts contends, while supporting the region's agriculture.

Sprouts' presence in York County comes with a commitment to the community. The store has announced that it will participate in the company's Food Rescue program, donating edible but unsellable groceries to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. This nonprofit serves 27 counties, including York County, and helps ensure that people in need have access to fresh and nutritious food. By contributing to these efforts, Sprouts is helping to reduce food waste while addressing food insecurity in the region, the company says.

Shoppers at the new Sprouts can expect a different kind of grocery experience. The store does not sell any products it deems unhealthy.

"No more ingredient lists featuring 40 unpronounceable chemicals," its website reads.

It only offers fresh, organic produce, bulk foods, vitamins and natural body care products.

Sprouts is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
