There were no championships for Chattanooga-area golfers and programs this week at the TSSAA state tournaments, but the strong finishes included a trio of runner-up teams.
Small schools in Division I (public) and Division II (private) competed Monday and Tuesday at Sevierville Golf Club, where the 36-hole tournaments for the large schools in those divisions were held Thursday and Friday. Par was 72 for boys (four scores per team count each round) and 70 for girls (two scores per team count each round).
In the DII-AA girls' tournament, Baylor was the runner-up Friday with a team total of 292 as St. Mary's won at 283. Three Lady Red Raiders finished among the top 10 individuals as Justine Emond (144) tied for third, Carlee Rogers (149) tied for eighth and Katie Tuder (154) was 10th.
In the DII-AA boys' tourney, McCallie (581) was third behind Brentwood Academy (568) and Memphis University School (568), with Baylor (613) fifth behind those three and Montgomery Bell Academy (599).
McCallie's Billy Burroughs (138) was third overall -- BA's Carter Graham was the individual champ at 131 after opening with a 64, with teammate Andrew Sciortino two shots back after closing with a 64 -- while Blue Tornado teammates Nate Coffman (145) and Jack Martin (149) placed sixth and 11th, respectively. Baylor's top finisher was Praval Bathi (151) in a tie for 15th.
In the Class AA boys' tourney, East Hamilton (60) was third behind Brentwood High School (585) and Bearden (605) as Tucker Wick (141) placed third overall, one shot behind Page's Laird Williams and two behind Cookeville's Owen Hill. In another top-10 finish for the Hurricanes, Griffin Law (147) tied for seventh. A pair of Walker Valley golfers competed as individuals, with Alexander Robinson (149) tying for 16th and Harrison Yost (151) tying for 21st.
Earlier in the week, Boyd Buchanan's girls were runners-up in DII-A at 294 -- behind Christian Academy of Knoxville (287) -- as the Lady Buccaneers' Alli Troxell (146) tied for fifth while teammate Gibbiekay Cain (148) was eighth, and in Class A, Signal Mountain was the runner-up among boys' teams and third in the girls' competition.
The Eagles' 626 was behind only Stewart County (613), with Signal Mountain's Brayden Helle (150) sixth and three teammates also among the top 30: Tucker Cruise (154, tied for 11th) Scout Schlosser (160, tied for 20th) and Hugh Witherspoon (164, tied for 28th). Polk County's Jaxon Swafford (155), competing as an individual, tied for 14th.
The Lady Eagles (338) finished behind Cascade (302) and Stewart County (312), with Signal Mountain's May May McGee (161) sixth overall.
