Man arrested in connection with former Clemson receiver's death

A man has been arrested in Michigan in connection with former Clemson receiver Diondre Overton's death, according to the Guilford County Sheriff's Office.

Jeremiah Diago Blanks, 20, faces a preliminary charge of first-degree murder.

Overton died in the early morning hours of Sept. 7 after being shot and killed in his hometown of Greensboro. He was 26 years old.

According to the sheriff's office, a warrant was obtained and detectives traveled to Michigan. The U.S. Marshals Service assisted in making the arrest.

Blanks was brought to the Oakland County Jail in Pontiac, Mich., while he awaits extradition to North Carolina, according to a press release.

Overton was a co-captain for Clemson in 2019. He finished his college career with 52 catches for 777 yards and seven touchdowns.

After going undrafted in 2020, the 6-4, 210-pound receiver played in the CFL, USFL and the UFL, spending the spring 2024 season with the UFL's Memphis Showboats.

Overton was honored during Clemson's home opener against Appalachian State on Sept. 7, where No. 14s Trent Pearman and Rob Billings ran down Memorial Stadium's hill to open the game.

"He truly was one of the sweetest-spirited kids that we've had come through here," Swinney said, "and, again, truly a great teammate."
