LSU was back in the friendly confines of Alex Box Stadium as it welcomed Mississippi State for a three-game series. LSU used two fifth-inning home runs to take the lead, and the Tigers never looked back as they won game one 8-6.
Kade Anderson got the start on the mound, and the Bulldogs attacked him early. A two-run homer in the top of the first gave Mississippi State an early lead. In the top of the second inning, Mississippi State added a solo homer to make it 3-0. In the bottom of the second inning, the Tigers executed a double steal, allowing Jake Brown to steal home and put LSU on the board as the lead was cut to 3-1.
In the top of the third, Mississippi State hit another solo homer to extend their lead to 4-1. Derek Curiel answered that with a solo homer of his own to cut the lead to 4-2. In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs finally scored a run playing small ball, as a sacrifice fly extended their lead to 5-2. In the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs hit an RBI double to extend their lead to 6-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, LSU flipped the game on its head. The Tigers scored five runs to take their first lead of the night. Danny Dickinson hit a three-run homer and Steven Milam followed that with a two-run homer to give LSU a 7-6 lead. Anderson was pulled from the game after 4.1 innings.
Anderson's final line was five runs, six hits, five strikeouts, and two walks. Connor Benge entered to pitch and he gave up a run on one hit, zero strikeouts, and two walks over 0.2 innings pitched. Zac Cowan then entered the game to pitch.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Tanner Reeves scored on a wild pitch to give LSU some breathing room as the Tigers' extended their lead. Cowan remained in the game to pitch the ninth inning, and he retired Mississippi State 1-2-3 to secure an 8-6 win for LSU. Cowan pitched four innings and allowed zero runs on one hit, seven strikeouts, and zero walks.
With the win, LSU moves to 24-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play. game two of the series will be Friday Night at 6:30 CT on SEC Network+.
