ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) -- A statewide teachers union is calling on New York's leaders to dial back on cellphone usage in the classroom.
New York State United Teachers is urging Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature to support "distraction-free schools" to help foster learning and well-being.
In a statement released Monday morning, the union said New York must provide restrictions on cellphone use during the school day. This, according to the union, will help protect students' mental health and improve their learning.
Last September, the organization passed a resolution to call for "bell-to-bell" restrictions on smartphones, smartwatches, and earbuds in schools. Some parents approve of the idea and some educators say school districts should choose.
NYSUT will hold a conference at the New York State Capitol Monday morning at 11 a.m.
