Gavin Stone has shoulder surgery, expected to miss 2025 season

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers pitcher Gavin Stone missed all of September on the injured list and is now likely to miss the entire 2025 season as well. The right-hander had right shoulder surgery on Wednesday, the team announced on Saturday.

The Dodgers did not offer many details on the procedure, which was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. Manager Dave Roberts didn't have any specific information when asked during his off-day press conference at Dodger Stadium ahead of the National League Championship Series.

"Had his shoulder surgery, successful. Identified a lot of stuff that was going on in the shoulder," Roberts said Saturday. "I don't see him coming back in '25."

Never say never though, as Tony Gonsolin was expected to miss all of 2024 after his September 2023 Tommy John surgery, but he's at least in the conversation for a potential spot on the Dodgers' NLCS roster, which is due Sunday.

After some growing pains in his first taste of the majors in 2023, Stone made great strides in 2024, posting a 3.53 ERA and 3.94 xERA after winning the fifth-starter job in spring training. He was also technically the most durable pitcher on the staff, leading the team in starts (25), innings (140⅓), and wins (11).

Stone was placed on the injured list on September 6 with shoulder inflammation, and the plan for him at the time was to shut down from any throwing for 10 days before determining the next steps. But as he was still experiencing shoulder issues, he was never able to fully get back to throwing, and was moved to the 60-day injured list on September 24, ending his season.

He joins a growing list of starting pitchers who will miss most if not all of 2025 after surgeries this year. River Ryan had Tommy John surgery in mid-August, a few weeks after Kyle Hurt had his own Tommy John procedure. Best-case scenario for those two is a return in next season's final month or so.

Emmet Sheehan had a hybrid Tommy John and internal brace surgery on May 22 that likely will keep him out a until at least the 2025 All-Star break.

Eleven different Dodgers starting pitchers on the 40-man roster landed on the injured list this season.
