Local residents can expect to experience a series of sonic booms Saturday morning shortly after the launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base.
The Bandwagon-2 mission, a dedicated rideshare flight conducted by SpaceX, is targeted for launch on Dec. 21 at 3 a.m. from Space Launch Complex 4E.
Approximately eight minutes after liftoff, Falcon 9's first stage will land at SpaceX's Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4) at Vandenberg, likely resulting in a series of sonic booms based on weather and other conditions.
A backup launch opportunity is scheduled for 3 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22.
Base officials stated that a 3 a.m. launch window is necessary to achieve the required orbital location.
The payload reportedly consists of 22 customer satellites -- 15 cubesats and 7 microsatellites, including South Korea's governmental 425 Project Flight 3.
