SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - A new children's garden is breathing new life into part of Summerville's Azalea Park.
The Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce's 2024 Leadership Dorchester Class raised $100,000 to make the 'Children's Discovery Garden' happen.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Friday and a tree was also planted in honor of Arbor Day.
You'll also find benches that wrap around trees and a children's amphitheater. An organizer says that the Leadership Dorchester group built it themselves. It's meant to be a space to mimic Hutchinson Square, a vital part of the Summerville community.
This community service project was led by this year's Leadership Dorchester class along with the Summerville Parks Foundation and Summerville Parks & Recreation.
Each year, the Leadership Dorchester class comes together and completes a service project that aims to improve the community.
"I'm proud to say that this is going to be something that my kids enjoy and their kids get to enjoy and it will be something that continues to give back to the community year after year," says Ashley Edwards, Marketing Chairperson of the Leadership Dorchester Class of 2024.
The garden will soon have some interactive music pieces. They expect to have them there in January.
