"When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly ... for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him." (Matthew 6:6,8) God already knows that "it is well" (2 Kings 4:26) because He "saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." (Genesis 1:31) Effective prayer requires listening to Truth and affirming Creation's perfection.

Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Prayer cannot change the unalterable Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of Truth; but prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all Truth. Such a desire has little need of audible expression. It is best expressed in thought and in life." If each waking hour expresses our desire to know and do the will of God, we will know that the kingdom of God is within us (Luke 17:21) and that our prayers are already answered.

In Mark 10:17-30, a man asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. It was apparent that the man loved materiality more than the things of the spirit. When Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give to the poor, the man went away sorrowing "for he had great possessions." He was unwilling to part with materiality. When we reach out to God in prayer, do we express a willingness to "sell" (give up, surrender, sacrifice) our personal desires, goals, loves, and hates? Are we willing to surrender the "old man and his deeds"? Colossians 3:9. John Wesley (1703-1791) believed that in prayer, we should "mean what we say ... and say only what we mean from the bottom of our hearts."

Eddy writes, "Every pang of repentance and suffering, every effort for reform, every good thought and deed, will help us to understand Jesus' atonement for sin and aid its efficacy; but if the sinner continues to pray and repent, sin and be sorry, he has little part in the atonement, -- in the at-one-ment with God, -- for he lacks the practical repentance, which reforms the heart and enables man to do the will of wisdom."
