Amtrak said riders in and out of New York should expect "significant delays" Monday, after downed overhead wires temporarily suspended all service between New York and Philadelphia over the weekend.
Amtrak said in an advisory there would be continued delays along the Northeast Corridor, because of single-tracking conditions that could cause congestion throughout its network. All trains between Washington Union Station and Boston South Station could potentially be affected, and some trains were canceled entirely to minimize other delays. By mid-morning, several of Amtrak's flagship Acela trains had been canceled.
"This is an ongoing situation; crews are actively working on resolving this issue," Amtrak wrote in an advisory. "Please note that plans are fluid and may change, and we will notify customers affected as soon as possible."
But it said it had no estimate for the resumption of standard service. Amtrak it would waive additional charges for customers who called 800-USA-RAIL to change their reservation times.
Although NJ Transit uses Amtrak's Northeast Corridor lines in northern New Jersey, it only reported isolated delays Monday morning on its Morris-Essex, Main-Bergen and Northeast Corridor lines.
