NFL Insider Demands League Action After Blown Call Ends Week 8 Contest

On Thursday night, the Minnesota Vikings traveled to SoFi Stadium for a primetime Week 8 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

With a 20-28 score and less than two minutes remaining in the game, Sam Darnold and the Vikings offense got the ball deep in their own territory with one more chance to tie the game.

The drive was quickly thwarted by the Rams defense as linebacker Byron Young sacked Darnold in the end zone, resulting in a game-sealing safety.

As soon as Darnold hit the turf, he vehemently lobbied the nearest official for a facemask penalty. When Amazon Prime's "Thursday Night Football" broadcast showed the slow-motion replay, it became obvious that Young did in fact grab ahold of Darnold's facemask to bring him down.

By rule, the NFL referee crew was unable to overturn the missed facemask call.

Immediately after the game, NFL insider Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk called for league action to change this rule.

"What's the argument against it? (I'll wait.) No one can say it will slow the game down. When it happens, it's obvious. And it's obvious that the NFL has failed to address something that should have been addressed long ago. Whether for player safety, competitive fairness, the integrity of the wagers, or any combination of the three, it needs to happen."

"Even though the NFL typically resists changing the rules during a given season, it's something that should be changed now. As long as the flaw persists, the chance remains that it will happen again."

If missed facemask calls were reviewable, the NFL officiating crew would have quickly issued a 15-yard penalty on the Rams, giving Darnold and the Vikings an automatic first down and a chance to continue their potential game-tying drive.

Instead, the Rams were awarded two points for the safety and kneeled out the remainder of the clock.
