Oct. 24 -- WATERFORD -- Police on Thursday identified the woman who died after being rescued from a backyard well last week as 52-year-old Sheila Antley, a longtime employee at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Waterford police and fire crews responded to Antley's 17 Pine St. home at 8:19 p.m. on Oct. 17 for reports of a woman in a well. Antley was taken by ambulance to L+M Hospital. She was later pronounced dead.

The cause of Antley's death is "pending further study," a spokeswoman with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said on Thursday. Police said the circumstances of Antley's death remains under investigation and released no further information.

Antley, according to her obituary, worked for 26 years in the phlebotomy department at L+M. Chaplains at the hospital held a healing prayer service for employees in the Wadsworth Healing Garden at the hospital on Tuesday.

Calling hours for Antley are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home at 84 Montauk Ave. in New London. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Langley's in Waterford.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to aid Antley's husband and family.

Fiona Phelan, spokeswoman for L+M Hospital, issued a statement on behalf of the hospital.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden death of Sheila. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends in the aftermath of this tragedy. We have made grief counseling available and encourage anyone on our staff to take advantage of that offering."
