Severe winds down trees, damage homes, and disrupt traffic in Montgomery County

Officials issued a Wind Warning until 10 p.m. and urged residents to secure outdoor items and use caution.

Montgomery County emergency crews responded to multiple incidents Sunday as powerful winds brought down trees, damaged homes, and disrupted traffic.

According to Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, a tree crashed into a house near Maple Leaf Court in Montgomery Village. At the time, someone was inside their bedroom, but fortunately, everyone in the house made it out safely.

Another tree fell on a house along New Hampshire Ave. on Oaklawn Drive, knocking out power in the area. Similar incidents were reported in Gaithersburg and Derwood, where trees crashed onto homes along Fleece Flower Drive and Azalea Drive.

Firefighters also battled a brush fire caused by downed live wires near Grosvenor Lane, Interstate 270, and Rockville Pike, Piringer said.

The severe winds impacted travel as well. On southbound I-270 past Route 121, trees blocked multiple lanes, causing delays.

Another downed tree in the Boyd's area may have been involved in a vehicle collision, further complicating traffic conditions.

Officials have issued a Wind Warning until 10 p.m. and are urging homeowners to secure loose outdoor items. Motorists, especially those driving high-profile vehicles, are advised to use caution.

Drivers and pedestrians should remain alert for debris and road hazards as cleanup efforts continue.
